Swine Flu


Swine Flu: The Swine Flu is a respiratory viral disease which is usually found in Pigs but can sometimes be transmitted to Humans & cause epidemics or even pandemics.

The viral strain involved is type A H1N1. The virus can be spread amongst Humans from direct contact which can occur through coughing, sneezing or contamination of hands & surfaces.

 

Symptoms of Swine flu:

  • Body aches
  • Cough
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain
  • Runny nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sore throat

Less Common Symptoms of Swine flu:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Swine flu Complications:

  • Pneumonia
  • Respiratory failure
  • Death

Treatments for Swine flu:

*  If infected, Stay at home & avoid Travelling.

*  Don't mix with other people.

*  Separate from others, wear a face mask, keep a distance of one meter from them or stay in a separate room.

*  Separate toilet - Try to use a toilet that no-one else is using especially if you have diarrhea.

*  Wash hands regularly with soap and water.  more than 6 times a day is recommended.

*  Cover your mouth - When coughing or sneezing, cover your nose and mouth, use tissues and dispose of them immediately after use and immediately wash hands using alcohol gel or handwipes.

*  House cleaning – At least once a day, clean taps, door knobs, light switches and other parts of the house that may have been touched.

*  Don't share towels, pillows, tooth brushes or any other personal items.

*  Drink lots of fluids, rest and eat if possible.

*  Fever medications - Use paracetamol for fever if needed. Do not use aspirinin children due to the risk of Reye's syndrome.
